This was a frequently cited problem in Fairfield County, with young people from Connecticut, where the drinking age was 21, driving to New York, where they could drink at 18. Some states also lowered their legal ages to conform with their neighbors so that young people would not be lured across state lines to drink and face the danger of traffic accidents on the way back home. A frequently heard argument was that if young people were old enough to join the armed forces or be drafted, they were old enough to drink. Many states, including Connecticut, lowered the drinking age to 18 from 21 during the 1960's.
